Overseas Pakistanis
A dual national is a person who also has a citizenship of another country in addition to Pakistan's (overseas Pakistanis or OSPs). Remittances from OSPs are what have kept Pakistan afloat despite poor economic indicators.
For such people, a case can be made that Pakistan is merely a sandbox or a lab rat that can be experimented upon, and if it is no more, the OSP still has his home and business intact.
Our proposed reforms for dual nationality include:
- Abolishment of dual nationality like India. Most of our remittances are from middle-east that does not grant citizenship.
- If abolishment of dual nationality is not economically viable, overseas elections must be introduced with voting rights reserved for only those Pakistanis who have remitted over a certain amount to Pakistan in the past election cycle.
- Each remmitter can spread his net remittances to as many overseas Pakistanis as he wants, given they all fulfill the minimum remittance limit for voting. E.g. if the minimum limit for voting is set at $5000 and Mr. Aslam remitted $25000 over the past election cycle, he can include a maximum of four more people (from his family or others) who haven't sent any remittance over the past cycle. This may introduce a bias, but it will be a good bias.
- No OSP in politically exposed positions e.g. political journalism on electronic media, armed forces, government or bureaucracy.
